Against the new property tax policy of the BMC, the residents have decided to protest strongly. They now plan to conduct a fast for one day in protest against the new property tax policy.
BMC has decided to implement a new property tax policy in Mumbai. The new policy will be based on the capital value of the property. However claiming this policy to be ineffective and would not be suiting to the various property prices existing in different areas of the city, the residents have decided to go on strike against the civic body.
As the property prices in different areas are different, there will be disparity in property tax as well. For instance a 300 sq. ft. flat in Marol will invite a property tax of Rs.14000 while a 1000 sq. ft. flat in Colaba would bring only about Rs.5200.
The property prices of a 300 sq. ft. flat in Marol will be estimated around Rs.1 Cr- Rs.1.5 Cr. On the other hand the 1000 sq. ft. flat in Colaba would be worth over Rs.12 Cr. Still the property tax for the former is higher than the latter.
The residents of over 35,000 housing societies will participate in the protest. The protest is also noticed for the support of NGOs. Many NGOs have showed their support to the residents. Further the NGOs had staged some street plays, criticizing the manipulated governance of BMC.
The residents are furious over the BMC’s decision to compute property tax on the basis of capital value. They claimed that the tax calculation is confusion-generating. Most of the people have not understood how it would be possible to calculate the property tax on the basis of capital value.
Showing discomfort over the new property tax policy of BMC, residents will conduct their hunger strike at Azad Maidan for one day. The residents are supported well by NGOs like Watchdog Foundation, SOUL, Federation of Housing Societies and Bombay Catholic Sabha.
